The Lee County Board of Education named an interim superintendent and announced its search plans for the school system’s next superintendent during its meeting on Tuesday.
Steve Miller was selected to serve as interim superintendent, replacing outgoing Superintendent Stephen Nowlin who will head Jefferson County’s school system next year.
Miller, who currently serves as the Lee County assistant superintendent for operations and business, was pleased with the board’s decision.
“I appreciate the vote of confidence of the board and will work to continue to provide educational opportunities for our students,” Miller said. “I’m looking forward to working with the central office staff and administrators until we find a new superintendent.”
The board also approved a measure authorizing the Alabama Association of School Boards to conduct a regional superintendent search that will begin by Jan. 7, 2013, with a new superintendent hopefully in place by June 1.
While Miller will serve as interim superintendent until a permanent superintendent is named, he will not have any input in the superintendent selection process or be allowed to apply for the position himself, the board said.
