The Auburn City Council is requesting the Alabama Legislature authorize a special referendum to allow city residents to decide whether to increase property taxes by 9 mills to fund construction of a new high school and improvements to existing schools.

Auburn City Schools hopes to have the referendum approved by the Legislature during the upcoming session beginning Feb. 5, with a local vote possibly as early as August. If approved by city voters, the system would like to see the increase enacted in 2014.
