MONTGOMERY — A prooposed constitutional amendment to remove the state sales tax from groceries has cleared another legislative hurdle. The Senate Finance and Taxation Committee voted 7-0 Tuesday to approve the proposed amenmdent, which passed the House earlier.

“Keep your little, grimy hands off of my machine.” That’s the message legislator DuWayne Bridges, R-Valley, gave fellow House of Representatives members from the Statehouse floor Monday morning. Bridges’ voting machine was used by another lawmaker last week to support a proposed constitutional amendment that would repeal grocery taxes. Bridges, who said he was on an industry-hunting trip to Asia last week, said he never would have voted for the legislation.

Auburn, Ala. - On Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at approximately 9:08 p.m., Auburn Police responded to a call of an injured female on Alabama Highway 147 (North College Street). Upon arrival, officers found a female, later identified as 18 year old Lauren A. Burk, an Auburn University student, suffering from a single gunshot wound. Ms. Burk was transported by EMS to the East Alabama Medical Center where she succombed to her injuries.
