The Tennessee Valley Authority, faced with growing electricity demand and rising coal costs, asked regulators Wednesday to renew construction permits for two unfinished nuclear reactors it virtually abandoned 20 years ago. Knoxville-based TVA hasn’t decided whether it will complete the Unit 1 and 2 reactors at the Bellefonte site near Scottsboro.
Blogger arrested over leak of Guns N’ Roses songs
A blogger suspected of streaming songs from the unreleased Guns N’ Roses album “Chinese Democracy” on his Web site was arrested Wednesday and appeared in court, where his bail was set at $10,000. FBI agents arrested 27-year-old Kevin Cogill on Wednesday morning on suspicion of violating federal copyright laws.
Gustav kills 23; New Orleans makes evacuation plan
Gustav stalled offshore Wednesday and poured more misery onto Haiti after landslides and flooding killed 23 people. Oil workers began leaving their rigs and New Orleans drew up evacuation plans. Gustav killed 15 people on Haiti’s deforested southern peninsula, where it dumped 12 inches (30 centimeters) or more of rain.

Barack Obama stepped triumphantly into history Wednesday night, the first black American to win a major party presidential nomination, as thousands of Democrats transformed their convention hall into a joyful, shouting celebration. Incumbent Oscar Crawley won the mayoral race in Lanett’s municipal elections Tuesday, which saw an estimated 39 percent voter turnout, according to the city clerk’s office.

Mayor Gary Fuller, as well as city council members Patsy Jones for Ward 1 and Dr. William Lazenby for Ward 5 were re-elected Tuesday. Larry Gray won the Ward 2 seat. Ward 3 candidates Lucinda Samford Cannon and Joey Motley will face each other in a run-off election Oct. 7.
