BENTON, La. _ Investigators say 12 thoroughbred racehorses have died after fire trapped them in a barn at a Louisiana training and breeding center.

Sheriff’s investigators, the state fire marshal and agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the fire just before midnight Wednesday at Velocity Farms.

Deputies tell KTBS-TV that fire had engulfed the barn in northwest Louisiana by the time firefighters arrived. They say there was one employee in a trailer at the site at the time.

A specially trained dog was brought in Thursday to search for evidence of an accelerant.

A phone number listed for the farm was busy. A message seeking comment was left at a number on its Web site.
