Opelika firefighters responded to a call just before noon Thursday on Shannon Court.

When they arrived on the scene they found an unoccupied home on fire.

“It took two engine companies approximately 15 minutes to bring the blaze under control,” said Opelika Fire Department assistant chief James Morgan.

“The house was one of about six abandoned structures scheduled to be torn down,” said Morgan.

Thursday afternoon firefighters were checking for hot spots after they got the fire completely extinguished.

“The home was fairly small to begin with, so the fire pretty much completely gutted the structure,” added Morgan.

There were no reported injuries. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, Morgan said.
