The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is conducting a death investigation after an unidentified man with multiple gunshot wounds was found outside a mental health group home in Salem on Sunday night.
At about 8:53 p.m., Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the East Alabama Mental Health Salem House on Lee Road 175 that a man was outside the group home saying he had been shot, according to Lee County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Capt. Van Jackson.
When deputies arrived at the house, they discovered a man on the porch who had been shot multiple times, Jackson said. The man, who has not been identified, was not a resident of Salem House, Jackson said.
The man is described as a black male, between 30 and 40 years old, according to Lee County Coroner Bill Harris. The man was pronounced dead at the scene by Harris.
It was not immediately known if the man was shot before or after he arrived outside the house, Harris said. The man’s body has been sent to the state Department of Forensic Science for an autopsy and to be indentified, Harris said.
The case is being treated as a homicide investigation, Jackson said.
