It’s not too late for Opelika residents to register to vote in order to have a voice in the Aug. 26 municipal election.
State law allows residents to register to vote up to 10 days before an election. The final day for registration will be Aug. 15.
In order to be eligible to vote in the election, you must:
-- be a U.S. citizen,
-- live in Alabama and be a resident of Opelika,
-- be at least 18 years old on or before election day,
-- not have been convicted of a “disqualifying felony,” or have proof civil rights were restored,
-- not have been declared “mentally incompetent” by a court.
You can fill out a voter registration form at the Lee County Board of Registrars office at the Lee County Courthouse at 215 S. 9th St. in Opelika between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
In addition, you can download a voter registration form online at the Alabama Secretary of State Web site at http://www.sos.state.al.us/Elections/VoterReg.aspx and mail the form to the Lee County Board of Registrars office at P.O. Box 1530, Opelika, Ala., 36803.
The mayor’s office and city council wards 1 through 4 will be decided in the Aug. 26 Opelika municipal election.
