MONTGOMERY, Ala.—A bill that would ban smoking in work places and many public settings in Alabama still has a chance of becoming law as the Legislature prepares for the final day of its 2008 session.
House Speaker Seth Hammett of Andalusia says the smoking ban will be one of the bills considered by the House on Monday, the final day of the session.
If the ban becomes law, the American Cancer Society says Alabama will join 26 other states that have some sort of smoke-free statewide law.
Gov. Bob Riley says he will sign the bill if it passes the Legislature. Riley says he quit smoking last summer.
