The wildflower trail behind the restored Shotwell-Salem covered bridge in Opelika’s Municipal Park has been named for Caroline Dean of Opelika.

She was honored earlier this month in Washington, D.C., for her education efforts related to wetlands.

Dean, who had the trail’s sign behind her during the ceremony, was surprised when Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller turned her to see the sign.

Dean will turn 90 in July.
