WASHINGTON — The economy pulled out of a dangerous rough patch in the spring, thanks largely to strong exports, but the rebound isn’t expected to last. Economic slowdowns overseas could make exports tail off just as Americans are hunkering down after the bracing impact of rebate checks wanes, plunging the country into another rut later this year.

Riley prepares state for storm

Governor Bob Riley today continued to prepare Alabama for the possible onslaught of Hurricane Gustav. The governor spoke by phone this morning to Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator David Paulison, who is currently stationed in New Orleans. 

Car stolen at gunpoint in Opelika by passenger in vehicle

A driver in Opelika reported his car was stolen at gunpoint by someone he had given a ride to early Thursday morning, according to police. The victim reported he was driving a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis when a passenger pulled a gun on him and then took the vehicle, according to Opelika police Capt. Allan Elkins.

Name of pedestrian killed on Interstate 85 in Opelika still pending

More than 12 hours after a 51-year-old man was struck and killed on Interstate 85 Wednesday, Lee County Coroner Bill Harris was still trying to reach the man’s family and was unable to release the name. The name of the man will not be released until his family is reached, Harris said.

Blogger arrested over leak of Guns N’ Roses songs

A blogger suspected of streaming songs from the unreleased Guns N’ Roses album “Chinese Democracy” on his Web site was arrested Wednesday and appeared in court, where his bail was set at $10,000. FBI agents arrested 27-year-old Kevin Cogill on Wednesday morning on suspicion of violating federal copyright laws. 

Gustav kills 23; New Orleans makes evacuation plan

Gustav stalled offshore Wednesday and poured more misery onto Haiti after landslides and flooding killed 23 people. Oil workers began leaving their rigs and New Orleans drew up evacuation plans. Gustav killed 15 people on Haiti’s deforested southern peninsula, where it dumped 12 inches (30 centimeters) or more of rain.

Barack Obama stepped triumphantly into history Wednesday night, the first black American to win a major party presidential nomination, as thousands of Democrats transformed their convention hall into a joyful, shouting celebration. Competing chants of “Obama” and “Yes we can” surged up from the convention floor as the outcome was announced.
