MONTGOMERY — A proposed constitutional amendment to remove the state sales tax from groceries has cleared another legislative hurdle. The Senate Finance and Taxation Committee voted 7-0 Tuesday to approve the proposed amenmdent, which passed the House earlier.
The measure now goes to the Senate. It would remove the state’s 4 percent sales tax on groceries and replace the lost revenue by eliminating the state income tax deduction for federal taxes paid.
