Joe Turnham: Four percent sales tax on groceries should be removed
Alabama Democratic Legislative leaders recently declared that a top priority in the 2009 Regular Session will be the elimination of the 4 percent state sales tax on food. This same measure passed the House in 2008 and made it to the Senate floor for final passage only to be high jacked by contract lobbyists and die from a lack of Republican support.

The Third Congressional District of Alabama is a large land swath that runs from Cherokee County down to the Pike County line. From the foothills of the Appalachians to the edge of the Wiregrass, the people that live in this congressional district are a microcosm of our state. I know many of them personally and have traveled nearly every county road in the boundaries of the 13 counties that comprise this district.

Joe Turnham: 2008 session not all bad
When you look for the worst in something, you usually find it. Public angst with the Alabama Legislature’s high profile failures in 2008 is understood. However, on this patriotic weekend, I want to share with you some positive successes the Alabama Legislature had in the 2008 session. Even amid the disappointments of 2008, many members worked diligently and crossed party lines to enact positive and meaningful legislation.
