Letter: The past remembered gives resolve for the future
Since 2006, I’ve lost four friends, not acquaintances, but friends in the most definitive meaning of the word. I closed out 2008 receiving a phone call about 10 minutes before midnight my friend of 33 years had breathed his last only minutes be-fore. It gave me reason for remembering and reflecting on my past with conclusions and resolve for 2009 and beyond.

Tips for a healthy marriage bring out old stereotypes
Today I received an e-mail announcement about a bridal expo co-sponsored by the Alabama Community Healthy Marriage Initiative.

Letter: Distorted, misguided government policies caused free market failure
In the 1990s, I used to give speeches on federal government deficit spending and the potential problems it would cause. Consequently, I have not been surprised by the recent financial turmoil that has devastated our economy.

Letter: People need to get behind new coach and move forward
I just want to say that I agree wholeheartedly with Malcolm Cutchins’ column of Dec. 18. It’s time for Auburn fans to get together and support our new coach. The university has answered all questions, and anyone who is disagreeing is just speculating. The press is feeding on it because it sells papers, ratings and advertising, but it hurts Auburn badly. Provide facts or hush!

Letter: Don’t read much into Chizik’s record at Iowa State
I cannot believe that a lot of people only look at Gene Chizik’s 5-19 record at Iowa State. It just amazes me. The head coach he replaced was Dan McCarney who, in 12 years there, was 56-85 with a .397 winning percentage. McCarney’s first two years at Iowa were 3-8 and 2-9 (5-17).

Letter: ‘Big bucks’ at Auburn care nothing about its fans or players
It is with great shock and sadness that we have watched the firing of Tommy Tuberville and the cover-ups of the Auburn University administration. The recent protest was held at an inconvenient time for most working people to be able to attend, but I think it’s wonderful for the students to take this step to voice the deep regrets of many of us that this would happen to such a great coach and man of deep respect.

Taking sales tax off groceries would be step in right direction
I am a member of the United Methodist Church, League of Women Voters, American Association of University Women and Alabama Arise. These non-partisan organizations plus many others are calling on legislators to work together to make Alabama’s tax system fairer as happened when Gov. Bob Riley and Rep. John Knight cooperated to raise the threshold for paying income tax.

Letter: University has more issues to address than new coach
I do not personally know Tommy Tuberville. I think from what I have seen, he is a fine man and a man of character.

Letter: Jacobs, Gogue made big mistake in forcing Tuberville to leave
Mistakes. We all make ’em, some small, some not so small. Goodness knows, I’ve made enough in my life.

Letters: Renting space to church makes business sense in Valley
According to the Opelika-Auburn News Nov. 25, Rev. Steve York had petitioned the Valley City Council twice in three days to rent the Valley Community Center on Sunday mornings for church service. Apparently, the mayor and City Council are in a conundrum over whether or not to grant said petition.

Letter: Columnist shouldn’t lead readers down non-scientific path
In his latest column, Malcolm Cutchins closes his argument by directing the reader to a Web site; here, a video plays in which Obama voters are asked questions in an effort to make them appear ill-informed and biased toward Obama by the media. It doesn’t take a science Ph.D. to recognize this as non-scientific. Assuming Cutchins knows better, he should not lead his readers astray.

Letter: Many don’t know it, but they will benefit from Obama presidency
Commenting on Bruce Murray’s letter about, “Knowing little about President-elect Obama’s personal background.” I think the election proved the research about who he is. People are still trying to label him as a Muslim, a person that goes to a church that spews hatred.

Article about local donkey symbolic of recent election
I found the recent article about Irene, a local donkey and official mascot of the Democratic Party, rather amusing. When Democratic Party Chairman Joe Turnham was asked how difficult Irene’s vote was to garner, he remarked, “Just give Irene a carrot and she’ll vote for you.” How similar to our past election.

Shop locally during the holiday season
I encourage all residents to spend their holiday dollars with local, independently owned businesses in Auburn-Opelika. Your locally owned independent businesses and franchises will not benefit from any kind of government bailout.

Letter: God has a plan and presidential election results were part of it
I am so glad and thankful all of my family took advantage of the privilege and freedom to vote in this election: Clifford Sr., Nicole, Phyllis, Clifford Jr., Kenneth Sr. and myself, Delores. Indeed, we became a part of making history in this country. Our vote was counted. Praise God!

Teen commended for taking moral approach to sex
I am writing to commend Miss Emma Strickland for her very mature and insightful letter of Nov. 9. It is refreshing and encouraging to hear a young person express herself on the issue of sex from a moral standpoint rather than a contraceptive approach.

Letter: Media didn’t dig deep enough into McCain’s history
I must say I sympathize with Bruce Murray, who, despite the longest presidential campaign in history, stated on Nov. 12 that he was ignorant of one of the two major candidates. And like Murray, I too am ignorant and I also blame the so-called left-wing media.

Letter: Voters need to be better educated on amendments that affect area
Your recent editorial complained about the voters’ lack of support for the 1 percent tax hike in Lee County. I propose that the reason for this might be lack of information, rather than stinginess. I think I speak for many local residents who find it very difficult to get useful information about the issues that appear on our election ballots.

Letter: Religion should not get a free pass for resentment it causes
Recently, the Opelika-Auburn News carried my letter about a bridge built of plastic in Ohio, commending technology for “(being) useful while others chant and fiddle with their rosaries.”

Letter: America knows too little about the man it just elected president
The election of Barack Obama has encouraged true believers to tout his campaign rhetoric as fact. A case in point is the claim by political columnist Jim Evans that Obama’s victory is “the beginning of the end of the politics of smear.”

Letter: Teens can have willpower and save sex for marriage
In response to “Alabama teens not learning about self-protection and sex,” I would like to offer a teen’s perspective on the presuppositions bestowed on us by adults: “… teens are not learning about all of the tools necessary to protect themselves once they become sexually active.”

Letter: Company Obama keeps certainly worth suspicion directed his way
Recently, two Auburn University professors admitted to signing, along with some 3,800 other academic people, a letter in support of William Ayers, former Weatherman, Capitol and Pentagon bomber and friend and supporter of Barack Obama. I assume it concerned the subject of academic freedom and speech.

Eight years of President Bush were eight bad years
It started a long time ago, when someone said there’s weapons of mass destruction over there. Who was the intelligent clown that made that sound?

Letters: It’s a clear choice—a vote for McCain is a vote for America
We will vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin for the sanctity of life. Both McCain and Palin are pro-life. Barack Obama is head of the pro-abortion Democratic Party. Why do the Democrats hate Palin? Because she and her husband, Todd, chose to have that precious Downs Syndrome baby rather than have a butcher, not doctor, destroy it.
Letters: This great country can’t afford to let Obama win
Dictatorship would best describe your form of government. Barack Obama, this is not Germany just before World War II. Your election would set off a revolution the likes this country has never seen. Mark it down.
Abusing prescription drugs can have serious consequences
Area Red Ribbon celebrations are recognizing safe, healthy and drug free lifestyles as well as a national and local decline in the use of the gateway drugs tobacco, alcohol and marijuana. While teen use of street drugs is decreasing there is a new threat available in the family medicine cabinet, prescription drugs.
Letters: Hopefully nation can come together after divisive election
Soon the endless presidential race will be over. I agree with Jay Leno’s assessment that this may be the year when the winner demands a recount. Not only will the winner inherit a mixed bag of economic and defense conundrums, he will sort through it with exactly half of the nation anxious to see him fail.

Letter: Think twice before voting for Segall
Before you vote on Tuesday, you should consider what a vote for Josh Segall means. It could cause the Democrats to take control of the House, Senate and Presidency if Barack Obama is elected.

Letters: Rights of property owners come before political signs
It’s been brought to my attention that there are some local individuals that have complained about having their political signs removed from where they have placed them.
I have been encouraged to write you and share my observations, position on the issue and recommendations about the situation from my point of view as the Lee County Republican Party Chairman.
