Everyone present witnessed an excellent youth sporting event. None of the players sat out for more money, were arrested, asked to be traded or bad-mouthed the manager or coaches.

Dr. J. W. Darden’s legacy is living on through the restoration of the home where he and his wife lived and where he practiced medicine. The restoration of this house on Auburn Street in Opelika was relentlessly pursued by Dr. Yvonne Brown-Phillips, as she led the efforts and formed many partnerships to make this house come back to life. It was not an easy task but through her, their legacy was preserved.

Steve Flowers: What looms for Alabama, Riley?

Most political observers including myself have never seen a governor in his second term work as hard as Gov. Bob Riley. The Constitution prohibits Riley from running for a third term, but you would never know that when you look at him everyday. He is in full campaign mode. His ubiquitous daily schedule points to a person running for re-election.

When you look for the worst in something, you usually find it. Public angst with the Alabama Legislature’s high profile failures in 2008 is understood. However, on this patriotic weekend, I want to share with you some positive successes the Alabama Legislature had in the 2008 session. Even amid the disappointments of 2008, many members worked diligently and crossed party lines to enact positive and meaningful legislation.

Mike Hubbard: 2008 session one of worst in memory

The 2008 Regular Session of the Alabama Legislature must be considered among the worst in recent memory due largely to the lack of meaningful legislation passed and the Senate’s failure to approve an education budget before adjournment. The few legitimate successes in the session did not result from bills being passed, but from Republican efforts to defeat several bad bills introduced by Democrats.

I am not a biblical scholar, but I am familiar with some passages that to me make perfectly good common sense. The Golden Rule is the first of these, and among others is Job 15: 7-10. “But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the air, and they will tell you; or the plants of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you.
