MANCHESTER, England — Former Auburn swimmer Kirsty Coventry picked up her third World record of the week Saturday at the 9th FINA World Short Course Championships as she won the 200m individual medley with a time of 2:06.13.
Coventry shattered the old record time of 2:07.79, set by the American Allison Wagner at the inaugural FINA World Short Course Championships in 1993 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
For Coventry, it is her third World record and fourth gold medal of the week. She also set World records in the 400m IM and 200m backstroke, while also winning the 100m back.
No. 26 women’s tennis downs rival Alabama
The No. 26 Auburn Tigers (15-6, 5-6 SEC) defeated Alabama (6-14, 2-10 SEC) 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Yarborough Tennis Center.
The Tigers finished SEC play with a strong victory against the Tide heading into SEC championship play beginning Thursday in Auburn.
Martin highlights solid track performance
TEMPE, Ariz. — The Auburn track and field teams continued to excel during the outdoor season as the Tigers recorded impressive performances at a pair of meets Saturday, including a school record in the men’s hammer throw for Cory Martin.
Most of the team competed at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Ariz., while Martin and a few other throwers competed at the Tiger Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.
Early in the day at the Tiger Invitational, Martin passed teammate Jacob Dunkleberger for the national lead in the hammer throw and reclaimed his school record in the event with a mark of 73.07m (239-9). Dunkleberger was second with a mark of 68.70m (225-5).
The Auburn women also had two winners at LSU. Valentina Srsa regionally qualified for the first time this season by winning the hammer throw with a mark of 57.43m (188-5), and Kataline Mate won the women’s discus with a throw of 48.48m (159-1).
Men’s tennis falls to Alabama, 4-3
TUSCALOOSA — The No. 26 Auburn men’s tennis team lost a thriller Saturday against in-state rival No. 22 Alabama, 4-3.
Alabama won the doubles point, winning Nos. 1 and 3 singles. The team of Tim Puetz and Pawel Dilaj earned Auburn’s lone doubles win, downing Alabama’s Saketh Myeni and Felsenthal, 8-6.
Auburn returns to action this weekend at the SEC Tournament. The Tigers open with Kentucky as the No. 7 seed.
