AISA ruled the roost in 2008 for area softball teams.
And the spread of players coming from local AISA schools named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State team showed that talent, as eight area AISA players earned state honors.
In the AHSAA ranks, six local players were selected to the All-State roster.
Leading off the area in AISA were first-team selections Jessica Washington and Alyssa Eason from Lee-Scott.
Washington was named an AISA first-team pitcher after a junior season in which she finished 12-2 with a 0.81 ERA. She also hit .492.
Eason was named as a first-team designated hitter.
Wrapping up her final year for Lee-Scott, Eason hit .508 with 39 RBI and struck out just three times. From her catcher position, she had a .921 fielding percentage.
Lee-Scott’s Summer Powell and Callie Rawlinson were selected honorable mention.
Glenwood’s Olivia McLemore was named an honorable mention pitcher after a stellar freshman season. She was joined on the honorable mention list by teammates Britt Wilkerson and Terrell Dixon.
Chambers Academy also had a player earn honorable mention honors in Erin Sanders.
Area Class 4A teams weren’t far behind in players named with four — a strong feat considering the talent level in 4A that includes powerhouse teams like Alabama Christian and St. James.
Beauregard’s Cassandra Yarbrough was named the state’s first-team first baseman after she hit .447 on the year.
Teammate Aleah Payne was named an honorable mention shortstop.
Dadeville had two players named honorable mention in Class 4A — Reba Hawkins as an outfielder and Allison Padgett as a utility player.
Rounding out area players selected were Beulah’s Erica Nuncio as an honorable mention shortstop in Class 3A, and Smiths Station’s
Vanessa Peterson as an honorable mention outfielder in Class 6A.
Mississippi State signee Lindsey Dunlap of Hueytown was named as the state’s Miss Softball.
Dunlap led her team to the Class 6A championship, striking out 440 with a 41-1 record and a 0.57 ERA. For the year she had 16 shutouts and four no-hitters.
