It was a South Sub-State sweep for the Auburn High golf teams.
The Tigers boys and girls both topped the field Tuesday at the Auburn University Club to qualify for next week’s state tournament in Muscle Shoals.
Auburn’s boys fired a team total of 313, three shots better than than second-place Fairhope (316). McGill-Toolen placed third as a team with a round of 323.
As the top three teams, each qualified for the state meet.
Auburn was led by an even-par 72 round from Scott Strohmeyer, who took medalist honors. Alex Barnes fired a 79, Gabriel Wang shot 80 and Johnny Mann shot 82. Carl Langlois added an 84.
It was the fourth consecutive Sub-State title for the Auburn boys, who will be gunning for their fifth consecutive Class 6A state title.
“I’m very proud of them and proud for them,” AHS head coach Duke Smith said. “They’re starting to come around and are peaking at the right time.
“We still have areas where we need to improve, but we’re getting more consistent.”
The top three individual finishers not on a qualifying team also qualified for the state tournament. Those players were Devyn Albrecht of Dothan (75), Matt Wojasinski of Enterprise (76) and Myers Marshall of Daphne (76).
On the girls side, Jennifer Commander carded a round of 82 to help lift the Auburn girls to the tournament win — their first ever Sub-State win.
Jessica Rouillard fired an 86 and Coleman Humphrey and Kendall Trupp both shot 88s as the Tigers finished with a round of 256.
That proved to be three shots better than Central-Phenix City and Prattville, who each shot rounds of 259.
“My girls have played well all year,” AHS girls coach Mike Glisson said. “Central, Prattville and Spain Park are some outstanding teams and we’ve been back and forth with them all year.
“It’s truly an honor to win this tournament with the quality of teams here.”
Auburn had two players playing individually with Mallory Good firing what turned out to be the squad’s second-lowest score, 85. Unfortunately that score did not count toward the team total. Mia Lee shot a round of 94 as an individual.
Central was led by the defending Class 6A individual champion, and Auburn University verbal commit, Haley Wilson who shot a 76.
Wilson finished tied with Spain Park’s Hannah Collier, but fell to Collier on the first hole of a playoff for medalist honors.
Alex Harrell added an 80 for Central, while Lena Lemiuex shot a 103.
Collier’s top finish allowed her to qualify for the state meet, while R.E. Lee’s Mar Ugarte (80) and Oak Mountain’s Taylor Casebere (80) also qualified.
Opelika’s boys failed to qualify for the state meet, but nearly had an individual meet the mark.
James Sarquiz shot a 77 for the Bulldogs, missing the qualifying score by one stroke. Alex Roberts shot 82, Jacob Tickal shot 83 and Daniel Glidewell and Ryan Yacko had matching 85s.
