Auburn boys golf edges Opelika

The Auburn boys golf team beat Opelika in an 18-hole shootout Tuesday at the Auburn University Club, 310-331.

Scott Strohmeyer was the low medalist, leading the Tigers with a 1-over par 73. Alex Barnes shot a 78, Johnny Mann carded a 79 and Carl Langlois fired an 80 for the Tigers in the win.

Opelika was led by Daniel Glidewell, who shot a 78. Rylan Yacko and Jacob Tickal both carded 83s and David Mitchell shot an 87 for the Bulldogs.

Auburn will host the Joe King Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday at the AU Club.

LSA fires school record
The Lee-Scott boys golf team shot a school record 295 on Tuesday to win the Macon-East Invitational by 19 strokes at Lagoon Park.

Kyle Thommensen was low medalist with a 2-under par 70.

Will Garner shot a 73, Austin Murphey carded a 75, Matthew McCloud a 77 and Jamey Lester a 78 for the Warriors. Will Clowdus, who was playing as an individual, finished third overall with a 75.

Beauregard softball wins
Jana Cooper struck out nine batters to lead the Beauregard softball team to a 5-3 win over Beulah on Tuesday.

Peyton DeLong went 2-for-3 with three RBI, Cassandra Yarbrough also went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Felicia Harrelson was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Hornets (4-6) will host Opelika at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Opelika soccer sweeps
Opelika’s JV and varsity soccer teams picked up a sweep over Wetumpka on Tuesday at Bulldog Stadium. The Bulldogs won the varsity game, 3-1 while the JV squad won, 3-0.

In the varsity contest, Zach Chanthongphio and Jacob Koen scored goals while Brock Morris was credited with a goal after chipping in a 37-yard shot from Brockman Sanders.

On the JV side, Tim Rodgers, Justin Decker and Koen scored goals while Brian Likins got the shutout in goal.
Opelika (4-2-1) plays at Auburn on Thursday.

Tallassee hits milestone
Chris Adams’ name will go down in the history books as the person who scored the first goal in the history of the Tallassee boys soccer program.

In its first year of existence, Tallassee is 0-2, losing to Talladega, 4-1, Tuesday.

Gregg leads AHS JV
Trey Gregg had a night to remember as the Auburn High junior varsity baseball team swept Benjamin Russell, 18-3 and 9-8, on Tuesday.

In Game 1, Gregg went 5-for-5 with a grand slam, a two-run home run, two doubles and eight RBI. In the second game, he went 2-for-3 with a double. Gregg also earned the save in the nightcap. Jake Ashe picked up the Game 1 victory, while Dalton Edwards was 4-for-5 with two doubles for the Tigers. Also in the first game, Todd Thompson was 3-for-4 and Tanner Cimo was 2-for-4.

In Game 2, Drew Sikes earned the win. Thompson was 2-for-3 for the Tigers (7-1) in the second game.

Beauregard JV victorious
Paige Rogers allowed two hits and struck out five as Beauregard’s JV softball team beat Beulah, 8-5.

Tracy Griggs was 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs. Tori Malone and Patricia Hollinger were each
2-for-2 and Bre Cobb was 1-for-2 with two RBI.

Beauregard (1-2) hosts Opelika on Thursday.

Samford Middle wins
Robin Dunaway pitched three innings and struck out nine batters to pace the Samford Middle School softball team in an 11-0 win over Reeltown.

Jessica Moffitt was 3-for-4 with three RBI, while Chelsea Messer was 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. Trish Rosario was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Over the weekend, Samford (6-0) beat Auburn, 8-3, and Russell County, 11-1, in the Auburn Spring Invitational. Chloe Swatts got the win against
Auburn, while Messer earned the victory over Russell County.

Samford hosts Central on Thursday.

Wacoochee earns shutout
Darian Holmes gave up one hit and struck out four as the Wacoochee Junior High softball team beat Central, 15-0. Cyndal Goodwin was 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBI, Jessica Henderson was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Avery Carroll was 2-for-2 with two RBI in the win.

Wacoochee (5-1) hosts Russell County on Thursday.

AHS JV splits weekend
The Auburn High junior varsity softball team went 2-2 at the Auburn Spring Invitational this past weekend at the Auburn Softball Complex.

The Tigers lost to Handley in pool play and Sparkman in the quarterfinals. Auburn beat Charles Henderson, 9-1, in Pool play and eliminated Central, 10-0, in the first round.

Allison May picked up a pair of wins and one loss, striking out 19 and only giving four hits and one earned run for the tournament. Kathlene Gorman pitched five innings against Handley only giving up three hits and striking out two. She also posted three hits in two games.

Emily Glasscock, Lauren Moffitt, Shaynnon Haygood and Devan Nabors all posted several hits. Meredith Spears posted the only hit in the quarterfinal loss to Sparkman.

The Tigers will play Valley today.
