GULF SHORES — Beauregard High School claimed its first team championship in any sport when the boys track team took first place in the AHSAA Class 4A State Championships.
Beauregard finished with 81.5 points, just ahead of second-place finisher Guntersville, who had 77.
Beauregard track coach Glenn Copeland was ecstatic at the results.
“It was totally a team effort for the kids,” Copeland said. “Everybody did their part to get that championship. From the ones that finished seventh and eighth to the ones that won championships, everybody played their part.”
Even with his excitement over the boys championship, Copeland was just as happy for his third-place girls team.
“Just with 10 girls (qualifying for the state championships), they went after it,” Copeland said. “The girls worked hard to get what they got. I’m just as proud, if not more, of what they’ve done.”
After finishing second last year, Copeland said his boys were ready to go this weekend.
“The kids saw what they could do and went after it,” he said.
In 6A, Opelika’s boys failed to win their third straight state championship, finishing third, 18.5 points behind state champion Vestavia Hills.
Auburn High’s boys finished fifth, and Smiths Station finished 10th.
In 6A girls, Smiths Station finished seventh, Auburn eighth and Opelika 10th.
Tallassee’s boys finished sixth in Class 5A, while Valley’s finished eighth. The Tallassee girls finished 10th.
Dadeville’s girls finished seventh in the 4A track meet.
In addition to the team championship, several area athletes brought home individual championships.
Beauregard got individual championships from John Ware in the boys triple jump, Laveeta Bellamy in the girls 400-meter dash and the boys 4x800-meter relay team of Russell Alexander, Jeffery Jenkins, Brandon Hunter and Jonathan VanWettering.
Also, Kaley Glover won the 3,200 meters for the second consecutive year.
Opelika’s Corey Grant brought home titles in the 6A boys 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash, Nick Clayton won the boys discus championship and Bianca Pitts was first in girls javelin.
Auburn High’s Mary Ashton Nall brought home another title in girls 6A pole vault, and Smiths Station’s Amanda Daniel finished first place in the girls 6A triple jump.
Dadeville’s Kevin Keyes finished first in the boys 4A javelin throw, and the girls 4x400-meter relay team of Miranda Russell, Ebone Shaw, Karmeshae Thomas and Vontavia Finley also brought home a state championship.
The Tallassee boys 4x800-meter relay team brought home the 5A state championship. Team members were Tecumseh Huitzil-Brown, Joel Langley, Brian Simpson and Brandon Smith.
