For the second time in as many years, Beauregard will have a new softball coach.
After finishing up his first year as the Hornets’ head coach, Robert Langford said Tuesday he has stepped down to take a teaching position at Smiths Station High School.
“I’d like to thank (principal) Mr. (Richard) Brown for giving me the opportunity to come to Beauregard and teach,” Langford said. “I’m a teacher first and always have been.
“Teaching is so important for these kids and coaching is something I do to help.”
Langford stressed that he had not been forced to leave, but chose to leave Beauregard on his own accord.
“I wasn’t forced to resign or anything. This was my decision,” Langford said. “I just hope the program and the things I’ve done can continue because there’s a great group of girls coming up.”
Beauregard finished 21-20 in Langford’s only year as head coach. He coached two previous seasons as an assistant under former coach David Hightower.
The Hornets won the Class 4A-Area 6 regular-season title, finished second in the Area 6 tournament and advanced to the second Sub-State round of the 4A state playoffs.
While his main concern heading to Smiths Station is to get started as a math teacher, Langford said he will be open to any coaching positions that may come his way.
“I’m going to spend some time with family — I’ve got a wife that hasn’t seen much of me in about six years now,” Langford said. “But if a coaching situation comes up at Smiths Station, then I’ll consider it.”
