Auburn High senior Scott Strohmeyer took a big step toward qualifying for the 2008 U.S. Open golf tournament earlier this week.
Strohmeyer secured one of five spots at a local qualifying tournament at Bent Brook in Bessemer on Monday, advancing to the sectional qualifier which will be held on June 2 in Roswell, Ga.
Strohmeyer, an Alabama signee, was one of seven golfers to fire rounds of 68. But he clinched his qualifying spot with a birdie on the second playoff hole.
The 2008 U.S. Open will be held at Torrey Pines in San Diego beginning on June 9.

There were two other people from Auburn, Patton Kizzare and Jay Mundy, that qualified for sectionals and they should have been mentioned as well. The article should have been about all of them, not just Scott. In fact, the other two guys shot better scores than Scott. Jason Dufner and Jay Mosely should have been mentioned as well. Both of those guys eithered played for or currently play for Auburn University. Also, I think the dates of the Open will be June 12-15.
