Area golfers excel in junior event

Beulah’s Jacob Harper won the 12-15 age division of the Auburn Junior Classic at Grand National this weekend as part of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour.
Harper fired a two-day total of 150 (74-76). Michael James of Auburn finished second in the division with a 76-77—153, while Opelika’s Jacob Tickal took third with a 80-83 — 164.
Will Jones of Rome, Ga., won the 16-18 age group with a 150 (76-74). Alan Kepple of Atlanta finished second (75-77—152) and Maurice Jeffries of Peachtree City, Ga., took third (78-77 — 155).
Auburn’s Jake McClendon finished eighth in the age group (86-95 — 181). Jared Commander and Graham Hugall, both of Auburn, finished 10th and 11th respectively. Commander shot a 93-101 — 194, while Hugall carded a 101-104 — 205.
Area angler wins Wal-Mart Bass event
EUFAULA — Phenix City’s Mike Cavender won the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League Dixie Division tournament on Lake Eufaula on Saturday with a five-bass catch weighing 18 pounds, 7 ounces.
The victory earned Cavender $4,325 and placed him one step closer to qualifying for the Wheeler Lake Regional Championship in Decatur on Oct. 9-11, where he could ultimately win a new 198VX Ranger boat and a Chevy truck.
Cavender fished for big bites by flipping and dragging jigs.
Rounding out the top five boaters are Dalton Bobo of Northport (five bass, 18-02, $2,545); Ryan Ingram of Phenix City (five bass, 18-00, $1,698); Clay Jens of Leesburg, Ga. (five bass, 16-15, $1,187) and Mark Hankes of Auburn (five bass, 16-13, $1,018).
