Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs spoke with the media for more than 20 minutes Sunday afternoon, explaining his decision to fire the coach he handpicked four years ago.
Jacobs said he was grateful for the things Gene Chizik did during his four seasons at Auburn, including his three bowl wins and 2010 national championship. However, he said, those glowing highlights weren’t enough to compensate for the regrettable way Chizik’s tenure ended, going 3-9 and 0-8 in the SEC.
