Auburn will pay newly hired football coach Gus Malzahn $2.3 million annually over the next five years, but only $500,000 will be considered his base salary, according to the letter of agreement the university released Wednesday.

By making Malzahn's base salary $500,000, Auburn softens the buyout if he were terminated without cause. Auburn will owe Malzahn his base salary over the remainder of his contract if he is terminated without cause, according to the letter of agreement.
