Matt Johnson to take over as Reeltown head football coach pending board approval

Matt Johnson will be the new Reeltown head football coach, replacing retired coaching icon Jackie O’Neal, pending a school board approval, the Opelika-Auburn News has learned Wednesday from two sources with direct knowledge of the situation.

Finalists named for Reeltown head football coach

Reeltown’s defensive coordinator and the school’s longtime junior high coach are among five finalists to replace Jackie O’Neal as the Rebels’ next varsity head football coach, Tallapoosa Superintendent Joseph Windle told the Opelika-Auburn News Friday.

Five candidates remain in search for Jackie O'Neal's replacement at Reeltown

With the exception of a five-year stretch from 1970-75, there have been only two head football coaches at Reeltown since 1956: Duane Webster and Jackie O’Neal. Both Webster and O’Neal are in the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Opelika claims top spot in final O-A News Prep Power Poll

For much of the season, Opelika has been voted the top team in the Opelika-Auburn News Prep Power Poll. That’s because the Bulldogs just kept winning — and by wide margins. So it’s no surprise that Opelika, in the final poll of the season, remained No. 1 after securing its first undefeated regular season since 2003.
