April Scott is looking to put out some new vibes on the Plains.
What started out as a need to feed her appetite for music, poetry and live entertainment has blossomed into Heart and Soul Presents, month-to-month events with headlining artists from all over the country.
“I just wanted some poetry,” Scott said. “I knew I had some friends that were musicians and managers and when I got things going the response was incredible.”
After Scott’s first event in June 2012, Heart and Soul Presents became in demand.
“Everyone just kept telling me you got to do this again, you got to do this again,” Scott said. “I realized people were really into this and would come if I kept doing it.”
The monthly open-mic nights are tentatively scheduled the last Sunday of every month. The venue will change monthly until Scott has a chance to lock down both a time and permanent venue for the events. Each event has one featured artist and five open slots for locals to sign-up and perform.
This month’s event, scheduled for Feb. 23rd at Zazu Gastropub, will feature Ingrid Wood of Cincinnati. Wood has toured all over the country and has even performed overseas. Her songs have been performed by the Symphony of Cincinnatti, Lalah Hathaway and Queen Latifah.
“When I lived in Miami I went to lots of poetry nights and I’ve always been interested in the poetry scene. There just wasn’t one here. My friends who have gone say that poetry nights are a dime a dozen, but the crowds that come out in Auburn are so energetic it makes it a great experience,” Scott said.
During her undergraduate studies at Tuskegee University, Scott was the head coordinator for entertainment events on campus. She learned there how properly coordinate events.
In addition to the open-mic nights, Scott is also hosting a speed-dating event at Stir on West Glenn at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 11.
For more information about the events or to sign-up to perform, contact April Scott at (305)982-7757 or email@example.com. Interested participants for the open-mic nights can sign up ahead of time or arrive 10–15 minutes prior to the event.
