The downtown Opelika staple, Eighth & Rail is the perfect alternative to the local college bar scene. Not only are they the only venue that provides live music four nights a week in Opelika, but they also serve the best fresh sushi in the area.
Eighth & Rail was started by Richard Patton and K. Cooper Ray in 2002. Mike Patterson re-opened the venue in 2012 with the vision of providing an entertainment option for a more mature and diverse clientele than what was being offered in the Opelika-Auburn area.
Patterson is originally from Columbus, Ga, but he moved to Auburn in 1993 to attend Auburn University. After college he started a career in the local restaurant industry for 16 years as a manager and owner. He moved from Auburn to Opelika in 2003, and after living here for nine years, felt that he should take the opportunity to open a business in Opelika to be closer to provide an entertainment option for the community that he lives in and loves.
Eighth & Rail has a certified mixologist, Kelly Rollins, on staff to provide patrons with the highest quality cocktails. They also have a variety of weekly music artists for customers to relax, unwind, and listen to in a comfortable setting. Patterson said, “Tuesday nights we host a weekly Jazz Jam for local musicians and fans to join in and have a place to play the music they love. Thursday through Saturday we feature music options from local pianists to acoustic solo artists and small bands.”
Eighth & Rail offers a full sushi menu featuring the freshest fish available, served by Chef Cory Pacheco. They offer sushi Tuesday through Saturday from 5 pm until 10 pm and drinks until 2 am. The following that their sushi has continues to grow. One plan that Patterson has for the future is to expand Eighth & Rail’s sushi bar into the second floor, allowing more room for both the music venue and sushi menus to grow. They also plan to continue using local suppliers. Patterson said, “We strive to support as many other local businesses as possible. Like our desserts are provided by The Cheesecake Cottage and we purchase produce from local farmers markets. We also use local businesses for professional services.”
Eighth & Rail has cemented itself as a key hotspot in downtown Opelika, away from the craziness of the Auburn college bar scene. With its amazing drinks, fresh sushi, and live entertainment, Eighth & Rail is a nightspot that you won’t want to miss.
