Sweet Malisa’s Custom Cakes and Desserts can’t be beat if you want to enjoy a sweet treat.

Malisa Harris purchased the Opelika bakery from Martha Venable in December 2011 and changed the name to Sweet Malisa’s Custom Cakes and Desserts in April. She offers all types of goodies to satisfy any sweet tooth, from cookies and cupcakes to brownies and even homemade banana pudding. Her cheese straws are also popular.

Malisa’s caramel cake is quickly becoming a popular item. It’s six layers and the caramel is made on a stove top.

“I have the burns to prove it!” Malisa quips. She said many people tell her it reminds them of their grandmother’s caramel cake.

“It’s one of my favorite things to make because everyone seems to enjoy it so much,” she said.

Malisa, who graduated from Auburn University in 2006, also customizes cakes and other sweets for birthday parties, showers and weddings. She’s thankful for the support of her customers, and said this past year has been a good one for her business.

“I cannot believe how much we have grown!” she said. “We have done more weddings to date this year than in the past two years combined.

“I love our repeat customers. It’s so much fun growing with them, celebrating their anniversaries and birthdays. I may not always remember names, but I remember the cake I made you.”

Malisa said many customers often ask about the spelling of her name.

“I’m named after my maternal grandmother, and sharing her name is very special to me. In fact, some of the things I make in the shop are her recipes. She has sent me hundreds of her recipes over the years handwritten on index cards, and I treasure them so much.”

Sweet Malisa’s is located at 108 S. 9th St. in Opelika. Store hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
