An Auburn man died after a skydiving accident at the Tuskegee Municipal Airfield on Sunday.

Sawyer Stephen Campbell, age 21, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:01 p.m., according to Macon County Coroner Hal Bentley.

Campbell was attempting his second jump of the day from an elevation of approximately 10,000 feet, t he Tuskegee Police Department reported.

Campbell was the fourth out of four skydivers to jump on Sunday and sustained fatal injuries after having complications with his parachute while attempting to land. Campbell was examined by medics and ambulance prior to being pronounced dead.

“Something happened with his main shoot when he was trying to get it open,” Bentley said. “Apparently it malfunctioned and did not open properly.”

The Tuskegee Police Department is treating this incident as a death investigation until all facts and information pertaining to the incident have been reviewed.

Police and Fire Medics responded to the scene after receiving a call around 12:45 p.m. on Sunday.
