A community remembers Rod and Paula Bramblett at their memorial service

Community members stand for the family of Rod and Paula Bramblett at their memorial service at Auburn Arena on May 30, 2019.

The male juvenile driver of the vehicle that struck the SUV driven by Rod and Paula Bramblett on May 25 says he fell asleep behind the wheel at the time of the fatal crash.

Both of the Brambletts died later that night from their injuries. Rod was 53 and Paula was 52.

The 16-year-old driver told police he fell asleep while driving and did not remember what happened, according to the traffic crash report filed by the Auburn Police Division and released Thursday afternoon to the Opelika-Auburn News after an open-records request made last week.

The two-vehicle crash, which occurred in Auburn on Shug Jordan Parkway at the traffic signal at West Samford Avenue, involved an SUV driven by the Brambletts and an SUV driven by the juvenile.

The accident also left the juvenile with injuries. His name was redacted and not released on the accident report.

The teen was traveling southbound in the outside lane on Shug Jordan Parkway approaching West Samford Avenue in a 2011 Jeep Laredo, the report states.

The 2017 Toyota Highlander driven by the Brambletts is believed to have been stationary or near stationary in the southbound outside lane of Shug Jordan at the traffic signal at West Samford, states the report.

The juvenile’s vehicle struck the Brambletts' vehicle to the right of center. The impact caused the Brambletts' vehicle to be pushed into the intersection and through the opposing lane of traffic before coming to a stop on the curb, the report states.

The impact caused the juvenile’s vehicle to hit a pedestrian crossing signal and a traffic light pole before coming to a stop.

The report released by police is based on current and available data. The report states it does not include data extracted from vehicle and toxicology reports.

Rod Bramblett was the well-known "Voice of the Auburn Tigers," having broadcast Auburn athletic events for many years. Wife Paula worked in an IT department at Auburn University.

The teen is a local high school student, from a local family.

The Brambletts were remembered in a memorial service last Thursday, May 30, in Auburn Arena.

The investigation

A full investigation remains in progress, Auburn police previously said, adding that the Brambletts were wearing their seatbelts when the accident occurred.

A full and complete investigation is being conducted that includes examination of the crash and vehicle data, accident reconstruction, toxicology, determination of speed and/or other contributing factors, according to the previous report.

Once the investigation is concluded police will present the case to the district attorney’s office for review, the report stated.
