ORANGE BEACH — The Opelika-Auburn News once again was judged as one of Alabama’s most award-winning newspapers, claiming an impressive 19 awards in news coverage and 14 in advertising honors at the 2019 Alabama Press Association annual awards banquet.

The awards were based on work published during the 2018 calendar year.

Included in the award recognition were first place honors for best editorial, best editorial page, best sports coverage, best business story/column, best news feature story, best sports feature story; and among the many advertising honors, a prestigious second-place finish for the Advertising Sweepstakes award.

The awards were announced Saturday night at Perdido Beach Resort.

The list of awards include the following (in the order they are listed by the press association):

» Best Sports Coverage, first place, by Scott Fields, Justin Lee, Jordan Hill and Josh Vitale.

» Best In-depth News Coverage, second place, “Eye-cancer cases puzzle doctors” by Kara Coleman.

» Best Business Story or Column, first place, “The T-100 project” by Troy Turner.

» Best Business Story or Column, second place, “Opelika mayor: Cultivating long-distance relationships part of blueprint for success” by Keith Huffman.

» Best Feature Story Coverage, third place, “Honor and Duty: A Marine, CIA operative, Auburn man” by Troy Turner.

» Best News Feature Story Coverage, first place, “WWII flier, Opelika native gets overdue recognition (Boody Brown story)” by Troy Turner.

» Best Humorous Column, third place, “A hard order of steak and eggs” by Troy Turner.

» Best Human Interest Column, second place, “Just as I am, and waiting not (Billy Graham tribute)” by Troy Turner.

» Best Editorial Column or Commentary, third place, “Peace and justice don’t live here” by Troy Turner.

» Best Sports Single-Event Story, second place, “Central-Phenix City slams Thompson, takes home Class 7A state championship” by Jordan Hill and Justin Lee.

The Opelika-Auburn News competes in Division B, which represents all of the mid-size daily newspapers in Alabama, including The Outlook (Alexander City), The Fort Payne Times-Journal , the Jackson County Sentinel (Scottsboro), The Clanton Advertiser , The Cullman Times , The Daily Mountain Eagle (Jasper), The Valley Times-News (Lanett) and The Selma Times-Journal .
