Before we go forward on this food review, there are some things you need to know about me.
1. I’m Italian. So when it comes to pizza, pasta, any of that, I’m slightly picky.
2. I’m a workaholic. So if I do eat out, it’s generally with my computer in tow and I’m multitasking. So yes, I know every restaurant in Lee County that has Wi-Fi available.
3. I like what I like and rarely deviate from the menu when I find a “go to” thing.
The reason I felt the need to point all of that out to the readers is because they all apply in some way, shape or form for why Uncle Maddio’s on South College Street is one of my favorite places for lunch in Auburn.
I honestly didn’t know about it until March, about five months after moving here. And the first thing I tried was the buffalo chicken pizza. I know it’s not the “traditional” Italian pizza, but I love anything that has to do with buffalo chicken, so I was all in. Plus, I’m picky with sauce. This was the best option for me knowing my taste buds.
But when I watched them make my pie (yes, it’s a pizza pie so you can call it that), I noticed that they were putting marinara/tomato basil sauce on the buffalo chicken pizza.
What!? Huh!? I mean…. WHAT!?
So wait, marinara sauce, plus hot sauce, plus ranch dressing, plus the cheeses, chicken, but no blue cheese (I detest blue cheese). I mean, how is that going to taste? Won’t all the sauces clash? What have I got myself into?
Deliciousness. That’s what I got myself into.
I was hooked. Thank you Uncle Maddio’s for giving me another lunch option when I’m close to campus.
Then I found out that the pizza joint had free guest Wi-Fi. Well, I was already hooked on the buffalo chicken pizza, and now I found out I can work and write from a comfortable booth and drink all the Coke Zero I want? Sold. Sign me up. All in.
And though I’m a complete fan of the buffalo chicken pizza, and it’s unusual for me to deviate when I find something I like, I have branched out in my many visits there over the past six or so months. The Tuscan meatball sandwich is quite tasty. And I have found that the tomato basil sauce that is used makes this Italian girl happy.
However, when I went to do this review — shockingly during a lunch break when I had to write a column about Auburn football for this week’s game — I tried a new pizza. I had always been intrigued by the Jamaican Jerk pizza (as much as I love anything buffalo, jerk is a close second). When I ordered it, one of the employees immediately jumped in with a “good call.”
It was. Again, the marinara (or tomato-basil sauce as they describe it) went on the pie along with mozzarella, grilled jerk chicken, red onions, green peppers, pineapples and cilantro. The only thing I had to complain about was that the cilantro got in my teeth and I had to live with the fact that I ate an entire pizza by myself.
Along with the food being great — again I literally haven’t had a bad thing on the menu yet — the atmosphere is laid back and even when it’s busy — especially on Fridays — I never feel like it’s overwhelming. There are TVs scattered for folks who want to watch a game during dinner time, it’s on ESPN/SEC Network during the day and it’s good to take the kids to or have a laid back business meeting. Or if you’re like me, a great place to have a working lunch when you want to get away from the office.
I highly recommend Uncle Maddio’s. And I’ll definitely be there again. Likely next week. Sitting in my back corner booth typing away while trying not to eat an entire pizza.
