Opelika vs. Central

Opelika's Jaylen Stinson (2) runs with the ball in the first half. Opelika Bulldogs vs. Central Red Devils on Friday, Sept. 21, at Opelika.

Opelika rising senior Jaylen Stinson has caught the attention of college coaches across the country. Earlier this week, a major Big Ten team came calling in hopes of adding Stinson to the fold.

Stinson received a scholarship offer from Nebraska on Monday to grow his list to 12 total offers. The 5-foot-8 Stinson plays both ways for the Bulldogs and is rated as a three-star wide receiver prospect per 247Sports and Scout.

For Stinson, the offer from the Cornhuskers was validation for the countless hours he has put in to get even better.

“I was very excited,” Stinson said. “All the hard work and time I have put in to the game of football is starting to pay off.”

Stinson spent time at receiver in his junior year, but he truly made an impact for the Bulldogs at safety. He led the Bulldogs with 66 total tackles — 50 of which were solo — while tacking on two tackles for loss. His play earned him a spot on The Opelika-Auburn News’ All-Area Large School First Team.

Stinson was called upon as a sophomore to step in for an injured teammate, and since that time he’s established himself as someone who opponents should avoid testing. According to Opelika head coach Erik Speakman, Stinson is a player that gives his all anytime he’s on the field.

“You probably cannot find any plays where Jaylen takes a play off,” Speakman said in January. “It's kind of one of those things in the coaching world where we say he gives us an eraser on our pencil. He can correct a lot of our mistakes on defense with his speed and the way he tackles and runs to the ball. He was a big part of our defense last year and will continue to do that this coming year.”

Stinson is just one of several area athletes who have been busy the past few weeks. Here’s a full list of local players and their latest developments:
