John Merrick needed to pull putter out of the bag on only 16 of his 18 holes Sunday during the final round of the Barbasol Championship.
On the par-4 11th hole, his second of the day, Merrick holed out from 152 yards with an 8 iron for an eagle. On the par-3 eighth hole, his 17th of the day, he hit a hole-in-one.
Merrick hoped his 6 iron from 159 yards would hit the slope to the right of the pin and get him within five feet for birdie. Instead, it dropped right into the cup for an ace.
“It was just blind luck. Two hole-outs in one round — I’ve never done that before in my career,” Merrick said. “So it was a pretty weird day, but kind of cool to see some shots go in.”
The 35-year-old Long Beach, Calif., native added a closing birdie on No. 9 to finish 6 under on the day and 13 under overall on the Lakes Course at RTJ Grand National.
“I feel like lately, I’ve been doing the opposite. I’ve been making bogeys coming in,” Merrick said. “So to finish like that, it feels really good. Hopefully it gets some momentum going into next week.
